Davis Thacher diary, 1816 July-1818 Dec. 31.

Diary, July 1816-31 Dec. 1818, dedicated to Davis Thacher, apparently written by his unidentified brother, describing his trip from Massachusetts to New York, N.Y., and Charleston, S.C., and his thoughts on life in the South. Entries describe his brother's experiences in South Carolina, "I may die abroad... my adventures may be interesting"; topics include seeking employment, working as a clerk and bookkeeper in Charleston, and as a tutor, with Dr. D[avid] Jervey, in Christ Church Parish, a position that he found challenging. Includes description of the Circular Congregational Church designed by Robert Mills, which Davis believed to be "the largest in the United States - cost $100,000"; sporting and leisure activities such as hunting on Bull's Island property owned by Christopher Fitzsimons with an account of the 1817 marriage between Fitzsimons' daughter, Anne, and [Wade Hampton II], noting that Hampton "gave her merely as a nuptial present $130,000 - The Bride-groom received the same from his father"; and membership in the "Amasophic Library Society" On the topic of horse racing, Thacher reported that "many came from Kentucky, Tennessee &other places equally distant"
